Dani Laidley opened up on Tuesday about the sadness she feels over being estranged from her daughters Brooke and Molly.

The former AFL star player, 56, spoke to Waleed Aly on The Project and revealed she was heartbroken after her daughters stopped speaking to her following her gender transition.

'It is the biggest black hole in my life. I can only imagine what they have been through with friends and work colleagues,' she began.

Laidley admitted she believes her daughters think she 'chose' to transition to Dani in spite of their feelings.

'That is definitely not the case. I've chosen to live and be here but it has to be as me, otherwise it is not at all. The decision to be here as me is for them.'

Dani then said she was hopeful about the future because she heard one of her daughter's asked a relative for a copy of her Don't Look Away memoir, showing they are still interested in her life.

Laidley was accompanied in the interview by her son Kane, the only one of her three children with ex-wife Joanne, that she is not estranged from.

It comes after Dani revealed the huge risk she took while she was still hiding her true self from family, friends and footy stars while she was coaching at North Melbourne.

The documentary also uncovers the shocking way her children found out she had transitioned, as well as the harrowing moment she recounts her suicide attempt.

In 2020, Dani's life spiralled out of control when she was arrested under accusations of stalking amid a battle with drug addiction.

A Victorian police officer leaked photos to the media of Dani in custody, which publicly outed her before she came out to other family members and friends.

In the documentary, she candidly speaks about her life as a closeted transgender woman in the AFL, her arrest, and how she has found her true self over the past three years.
