Manchester United fans have taken to social media as they believe they've spotted what a visibly frustrated Marcus Rashford muttered to Sergio Reguilon after being substituted against Newcastle.

The Red Devils fell to defeat at St James' Park as Anthony Gordon's first-half strike saw Eddie Howe's side take the three points against their rivals for the top four.

Man United's defeat is their first since Newcastle knocked them out of the Carabao Cup last month.

There was clear frustration on the face of Rashford, who was replaced by Antony in the 61st minute of the match.

Fans have taken to X as the Sky Sports cameras picked up a short conversation between the Man United winger and his team-mate Reguilon.

As Rashford went to take his place on the bench, he turned to the loanee and with disappointment on his face muttered a sentence to him.

While it is unclear as to what was said, fans have already began analysing the clip and are trying their best to decipher the message.

One fan asked:  'Did Rashford just say 'What the f*** am I doing here?'

However, this was quickly shut down by other supporters who stated 'I don't think you know how to lip read very well' and 'I'm pretty sure he didn't say that'.

Another fan suggested that Rashford was questioning his defence, as they believe he said: 'What the f*** are we doing near our goal bro?'

But one X user suggested that Rashford was simply 'repeating what someone in the crowd said'.

However, not everyone was joining in with the lip reading analysis as one fan fumed: 'Have we got to the lip-reading stage on football twitter now???'

While some of the Red Devils' supporters continued to discuss what may or may not have been said, other fans took to X to joke about the situation.

'How'm I going to drive home later in the snow?', one suggested in jest.

A jubilant West Ham fan, fresh off their win over Bačka Topola, continued: 'Nope! I’m a professional lip reader and his exact words are “West Ham are MASSIVE everywhere they go”. IRONS!!!!!'

While it is unclear as to what Rashford was actually saying, what is certain is that Man United will have to get back to winning ways if they don't want to be left behind their rivals in the race for Europe.

They face Chelsea next, with the Blues struggling this season.
