Who Is RuPaul's Husband? All About Georges LeBar
RuPaul has been with his husband, Georges LeBar, since 1994, when the pair met at a New York City club.
LeBar and RuPaul dated for approximately 23 years before getting married on their anniversary in 2017, which RuPaul only revealed months later. The couple's lengthy relationship, which sees them spending time on LeBar's ranch in Wyoming and in Beverly Hills, is everything RuPaul has said he wished for.
"He's so kind and funny," he told Buzzfeed in 2015 of his husband. "I remember praying, 'I want a sweet, sensitive man,' and I got an Australian who's just lovely."
RuPaul is a busy man — he has hosted 15 seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race, taken part in its many spinoffs, hosted RuPaul's DragCon and won 12 Emmys to date. Even with his full schedule, RuPaul says he and LeBar are very committed to each other. "He’s devoted to me, I’m devoted to him, and that’s the end of the story,” he said in a 2013 Oprah Winfrey segment.
After their private nuptials, RuPaul shared with Entertainment Tonight the reason behind their eventual marriage. “If you’re devoted to a person, nothing’s gonna change that. And after 23 years, you know, hey, I know him. He knows me. I love him," he told the outlet in 2017. "He’s my favorite person on the planet I’ve met. I’ve met a lot of people ... He’s my favorite person.”
Here is everything to know about RuPaul's husband, Georges LeBar.
He grew up in Australia
LeBar was born on Jan. 24, 1973, in Perth, Australia, though he later relocated to the United States.
RuPaul and LeBar now primarily live in two locations: a sprawling ranch in Wyoming and a colorful mansion in Beverly Hills. Speaking to Architectural Digest in May 2023, RuPaul said the playful design of their California house "inspires" the couple and their guests to dance often.
He met RuPaul in a club
LeBar and RuPaul crossed paths for the first time in 1994 on the dance floor at Limelight, a now-closed nightclub in N.Y.C. That night was also special for another reason: it was LeBar's 21st birthday. “He was dancing like a crazed person,” RuPaul told ET in 2017. “I went over and said, ‘What are you doing?’ You know, and that was that.”
The attraction was immediate, and apparently, so was their commitment. One week later, they were on Elton John’s private jet flying from London to Düsseldorf, RuPaul shared in a since-deleted Instagram post.
He is taller than RuPaul
It's no wonder LeBar caught RuPaul’s eye on the dance floor that first night they met — LeBar measures 6 feet 7 inches while RuPaul is 6 feet 4 inches.
“So, of course, I had to notice him,” RuPaul said in the 2013 Oprah segment.
He is a painter
According to his website, LeBar has a background in fashion and design, having studied in Paris, New York and Miami. However, his primary passion is painting.
“My images are a reference from my history comparing it to the present,” he wrote on his website. “Art is about exploring life for me.” LeBar has even painted RuPaul — his tableau collection called "Sitting on a Secret" features the RuPaul's Drag Race host painted with big hair and sunglasses.
RuPaul and LeBar got married on their 23rd anniversary
After more than two decades together, the pair exchanged vows on Jan. 24, 2017 — LeBar's birthday and their 23rd anniversary — in a small ceremony at their Los Angeles-area home.
RuPaul told ET that they decided to tie the knot after feeling a shift in their attitudes toward marriage following the 2016 presidential election. “What’s happening politically right now, you know, you never know what could turn around at this point,” the “Supermodel (You Better Work)” singer told the outlet.
“We are devoted to each other,” RuPaul continued. “We don’t stand on ceremony. We thought we don’t have to get married. But then, in light of what’s happening currently in the world today, what’s happening in Washington, we thought, you know what? Let’s just do it, because there’s too much at stake with our businesses. So, that’s why we did it.”
He prefers a private life
Despite his husband’s public-facing job, LeBar doesn’t have public social media accounts, and with the exception of an occasional red carpet appearance alongside his husband, LeBar is rarely photographed.
RuPaul has said that his husband doesn't have an interest in a public life. “He’s a great guy, but he doesn’t care about show business at all. He couldn’t care less," RuPaul told Hollywood Today Live in 2017.
LeBar spends most of his time on his Wyoming ranch
Although RuPaul visits, LeBar spends much more time on his Wyoming ranch than the Emmy winner.
“Most of the time, he’s on the ranch … but he doesn’t want me to come there,” RuPaul told Hollywood Today Live in 2017. He continued, “God bless you, Wyoming, but it’s very boring, and it’s the most isolated place on earth.”
Even though RuPaul doesn’t live full-time at the farm, he added that when he makes an appearance, “I dress up in gorgeous Western wear outfits."
RuPaul and LeBar plan monthly getaways
RuPaul has said that quality time away from his and his husband's day-to-day lives is important for their relationship.
“He works the ranch, I work Hollywood, and we meet up in fabulous places,” RuPaul told Hollywood Today Live. “You know, he needs breaks from time to time, because it’s a very different life.” According to RuPaul, the pair plan monthly getaways to places including Paris, New York and Maui.
